Getting Linux: Some FTP Sites
Linux/m68k-specific sites
- ftp.uni-erlangen.de, maintained by Roman Hodek, is now the
primary distribution site for all releases of Linux/m68k. [Germany]
- Mirrors:
- ftp.uni-erlangen.de is also accessible via HTTP
(which is faster if you're using a web browser as your FTP client).
- tsx-11.mit.edu
(the old 680x0 site) includes, among other things, a mirror of
ftp.uni-erlangen.de, and is a fast site within the United States.
- ftp.kernel.org is also located in the USA and supports HTTP access
too.
- Linuxberg is also mirroring the Linux/m68k FTP site, with
multiple T3 connections from Michigan, USA.
- People in Britain may want to use the UK Mirror Service's mirror (also available via HTTP). [United Kingdom]
- The University of Naples also has a mirror at ftp.unina.it, which
is reportedly fast in Italy. [Italy]
- A daily message listing the changes at
ftp.uni-erlangen.de is also available. Send a message to majordomo@lists.linux-m68k.org
with the line "subscribe linux-m68k-ftpchanges" in the
message body.
- sunsite.auc.dk is the home of Jes Degn Sørensen's work on porting
Linux 2.x to m68k and his Red Hat 5.1 port. (Also available by HTTP.)
[Denmark]
-
ftp.informatik.uni-oldenburg.de is home of the "Linux/m68k
Installation Guide" and a number of binaries not found at
ftp.uni-erlangen.de. [Germany]
- ftp.phil.uni-sb.de, maintained by Benni Lorenz, used to have a
large archive of Linux/m68k sources and binaries. Most of this
archive was superseded by the Debian and Red Hat ports. There is also
a mirror of ftp.uni-erlangen.de here (in mirror.erlangen/). [Germany]
- ftp.rz.tu-harburg.de is the location of another repository of
contributed binaries. [Germany]
- Keith Tomlin has an archive of Linux/m68k software available at zippy.spods.dcs.kcl.ac.uk, where he is the manager of the general FTP
site. [United Kingdom]
- Thorsten Flöck maintains a site for Atari users at wctc6.chemie.uni-wuppertal.de. [Germany]
- David Huggins-Daines has set up a Linux/m68k for Mac FTP site (also available via
HTTP). [Canada]
- David also has a CVS
repository for the Mac kernel tree. You can also access it
directly using anonymous CVS at
:pserver:anonymous@cvs.mac.linux-m68k.org:/var/local/cvsroot,
using module name "linux-mac68k" and password
"anonymous". [Canada]
- I keep some binaries that I'm working on at www.clark.net
(follow this link for a list of what's available).
General Linux Sites
- If you're looking for sources for something, chances are it's
available at one of these three sites:
- The mother of all Linux sites is metalab.unc.edu (also
accesible via HTTP).
- The aunt of all Linux sites is tsx-11.mit.edu.
- The stepchild of all Linux sites is ftp.kernel.org (also accessible via
HTTP) (ftp.kernel.org mirrors
virtually everything Linux... distributions, kernels, Sunsite, TSX-11,
the works).
- For the over-zealous, there is Linus Torvalds's master kernel
archive at ftp.kernel.org in California. This site is really only for those
with a kernel-hacking jones.
